Empresses and Architecture

For as long as I can remember, the movie Sissi has been a Christmas special on television here. I've spent quite a few Christmases at my grandma's and as she's a big fan of all things 'royal', I've watched Sissi countless times. I loved watching it, again, and again, and again! So when I finally got to see the palace Schönbrunn in Vienna, the former summer residence of the imperial family, it was like a little girl's dream come true. And on top of that, we had impeccable weather <3

We did the Grand Tour (tip: start at 8.30 am to avoid the masses), where we got to see 40 rooms inside the palace. The rooms are mostly decorated in Rococo style, but each room had its own theme/color and was impressive to look at at. And then the ballroom... talk about a little girl's dream! Afterwards we walked in the park (free entrance) and visited the Privy Garden, Orangery Garden, Maze & Labyrinth, and the Gloriette viewing terrace. All of that took us a good four hours of walking and we decided not to go inside the Palm House and Zoo.

Of course we visited a ton of other Viennese highlights, among which Stephansdom, Hofburg (Imperial Palace), MuseumsQuartier, Prater, Naschmarkt and the funky Hundertwasser house. And all of that in just three days!

The Viennese cuisine was extensively sampled as well ;-) But more on that in a separate post.
