The Year 2014

Posted on 30 Dec 2014 by maisha (posted in: blogs)

The end of 2014 is nearing and while it would seem the entire universe is recapping it through Facebook, I'm doing it very 'old school'. After all, I'm nearly thirty! ;-)
So let's see... 2014.
I, or rather we, started it off with a splash:

Good things come from cold water, didn't you know?!
With my birthday around the corner, we fled the country for some much needed and well deserved R&R in Suriname.
We set out on a refreshing bike ride in the smothering heat and were served up alive to the mosquitoes in Matapica. I found out that flying with a sinus infection isn't advisable... I turned a year older and apparently not the wiser. Hoping to do so as remotely as possible, yet some wonderful people managed to conjure up a slice of birthday cake out of thin air and a flower arrangement from Mother Nature. Somewhere under two rainbows.

It also happened to be one of those 'saved the best for last' kind of trips. We breathed in the serenity and wonders of the rainforest and were so very humbled to have been a part of it, if only for a while.

Oh, and as for 'Best PB Sandwich 2014', the award goes to:

You can read more about our (jungle) adventures here, here, and here. Oh, and also here, and here.
I ran a very hot 10K in May and wasn't too happy with my time. Little did I know it would be my last race and one of the last runs of the year. Oh how easily we take things for granted...

In June I spent some quality time with my parents in London. I love going places with them and I hope they never grow tired of me third wheeling along with them ;-)

July announced itself in the form of apples, millions of apples, apples for me ^^ From our adopted apple tree.

I kissed my apples goodbye, and sadly, running too. I managed to obtain an SI injury from which I am still recovering today. Thankfully there were lots of fun things to look forward to in August, such as my oma turning 95!!!

My friend Joline 'stepped into the marriage boat' (as we would say in Dutch) and I found myself blinking away a few tears of joy.

In September I got high on apples and high, literally. It was right then and there, high up in the sky, that I decided: jumping is the new running!

October was marked by the passing of our 10th anniversary, which we celebrated on Vlieland. Here I met my new hero: Berry Cranberry. *LOL*

We also threw an epic Halloween party. Epic in the sense that it's the first proper party we've thrown in a decade and epic because I finally got my promised grumpy cat pumpkin.

1+1=2 uncles in November, when uncle Guido also stepped into the marriage boat.

Right before I took two weeks off for Christmas, I was promoted at work. We celebrated this with lots and lots of food in London's East End and golden seats at Blue Planet in concert in Amsterdam.

Overall 2014 was a good year, even though for me, the last half of it was overshadowed by my SI injury. With running no longer available to me as an outlet for stress & frustration, I became an (even more) unbearable person to be around for a while. Thankfully I pulled through with yoga & hula-hooping. Yes, hula-hooping! It brought fun back into the equation and has helped strengthen my pelvic region and hips. And of course I can always count on these two fur-balls, even in 2015:
